File under ‘Early Hauntology’
It's been over 10 years since SKE was released and in an interview published in the excellent book by William Burns, Ghost of an Idea: Hauntology, Folk Horror, and the Spectre of Nostalgia, I mention SKE and how I've always considered it to be a precursor of the Hawksmoor albums that followed. I note from the hard drive the original, somewhat prosaic, working title was 'JM Instrumental’, mainly as I was starting to think and move away from more a traditional song structure. It also has examples of my first experiments with Moog equipment, at this stage not the synths, but my entry point via the filters of the original MoogerFooger Analogue Delay and Phaser effects.
It was originally released as a very limited CDr on the Reverb Worship label and then as download. Subsequently, I decided to keep it out of print for some time, mainly due to the fact that it has some rough edges - I was still perfecting the art of mixing - and I wanted to really establish the ‘Hawksmoor’ name. Looking back I recall it even achieved some early BBC 6 Music airplay from Gideon Coe who played out Euclid Dreaming a few times. I feel it's an interesting artefact and part of the bigger musical journey and considering the concept, tracks and overall feel, it’s maybe one to file under ‘Early-Hauntology’.
Available now on Bandcamp.
Merry Xmas
